Ancient citadel of Quang Tri

Ancient citadel of Quang Tri

Situated right on the bank of Thach Han river, about 2 km east of National Highway 1A, the citadel was built in the 1800s. Initially constructed by dirt and clay, the fortress was later upgraded using brick with 3m high walls and a perimeter of more than 2km. It served as the military base for the Nguyen dynasty in central Vietnam.

Under the governing of the French, the citadel became the center of the local and provincial governance apparatus. The French viewed it as a point of importance, adding prisons to entrap the revolutionary comrades. However, it had become the point of operation to disseminate a recruitment center for the Vietnamese fighting force.

Under the American occupation, the fortress is famous for the battle of Quang Tri citadel in 1972, which became one of the most gruesome fights in the American Vietnam War. Lasting 82 days and nights, it was bombarded by more than 300 thousand tons of bombs, equivalent to about 7 nuclear bombs. So much life was lost on both sides of the battlefield that dyed the Thach Han river red with blood. Nowaday, known by the name “the spiritual land”, the place stands not only as a memorial, a reminder of the little memories of war that’s passed and a must see tourist attraction, but also as a cemetery with no tombstone of all those who had fallen for the freedom of the country.

Besides its violent past, the citadel was a true marvel of Vietnamese architecture. Despite the erosion caused by time and the scars of war, what remains serves as undeniable proof that the Vietnamese were just as culturally developed and technologically advanced as any other nation two centuries ago.

Divided into 3 layers and stretching for more than 2000m in length and more than 20m deep, blended completely into Vietnam nature, the tunnel served not only as a safe haven for the people but also as a storage facility to hide the supplies and equipment.

Digged within 2 years, with the lesson of many collapsed underground bases, Vinh Moc tunnel was fortified and strengthened to assure the safety of the residents. Even though it was an underground shelter, the tunnel can still provide enough space for more than a thousand people, with facilities such as wells, medical centers, surgery rooms, school, meeting hall, radio station,...

The life within the tunnel is nothing that can be called comfortable. Without sunlight, people had to rely on oil lamps to be able to complete any task.
