The official currency of Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong (VND), available in denominations ranging from 200 VND to 500,000 VND. The most commonly used banknotes are 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, 100,000, 200,000, and 500,000 VND.

⚠️ Important Tip: The 20,000 VND and 500,000 VND notes are both blue and can easily be mistaken for one another. To avoid confusion or loss, keep your 500,000 VND notes separate from smaller denominations.

While the US Dollar (USD) is widely accepted in major hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas, the exchange rates offered by businesses often differ from official bank rates — making it more economical to pay in VND.

Currency exchange is simple and reliable across Vietnam. You can exchange money at banks, hotels, or authorized exchange counters, and major foreign currencies such as the Euro (EUR), British Pound (GBP), and US Dollar (USD) are all easily converted.

When exchanging money, ensure that your banknotes are clean and undamaged, as torn, crumpled, or written-on notes are often not accepted by banks or money changers. Likewise, always check that the VND notes you receive are in good condition before leaving the counter.

ATMs are widely available throughout Vietnam’s major cities and tourist destinations. It’s advisable to keep some local cash on hand for small expenses, particularly when traveling in rural areas.

Credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are increasingly accepted at larger hotels, shops, and restaurants, particularly in big cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang. A surcharge of around 3% may apply for card transactions.
