Hoi An was a major trading port in Vietnam from the 16th to the 17th century, known as Faifo. It was a maritime meeting point where foreign ships from Asia and Europe gathered. The coexistence of Eastern and Western communities fostered cultural exchanges and resulted in a blend of varied architectural styles, such as communal houses, pagodas, club-houses, and residential houses, all reflecting ancestor worship. Each nationality had its own quarter and lived according to its own customs, but fruitful interactions occurred among different ways of life. Today, Hoi An is a living museum that should not be missed.
