The 7-Day Luang Prabang & Nong Khiaw Adventure begins and ends at Luang Prabang International Airport, following a varied route through Luang Prabang, Long Lao Village, Kuang Si Waterfall, Sojam Village, Nong Khiaw, Ban Nayang, Pak Ou Caves, and the Mekong River. It is designed for travellers seeking a deeper experience of northern Laos through culture, trekking, village life, and river journeys.
The itinerary moves from Luang Prabang’s Buddhist traditions, local market, royal heritage, and riverside communities to rural trails, limestone scenery, and remote villages. Guests trek from Long Lao Village to Kuang Si Waterfall, stay with a Tai Daeng family in a simple homestay, complete the challenging 100 Waterfalls Trek, and travel by traditional boats along the Nam Ou and Mekong rivers.
With local guides, organised transfers, selected meals, guided cultural visits, and free time in Luang Prabang and Nong Khiaw, the tour offers a rewarding balance of discovery and adventure. It is best suited to active international travellers comfortable with moderate trekking, wet terrain, and basic village accommodation.
Begin the day early with a guided visit to observe Luang Prabang’s traditional morning alms-giving ceremony, an important Buddhist custom closely connected to the town’s spiritual life. Continue to a nearby local morning market, where residents shop for fresh produce, herbs and everyday necessities.
Return to the hotel for breakfast before setting out on your guided Luang Prabang city tour. Visit the former Royal Palace, now the National Museum, followed by Wat Mai and Wat Xieng Thong, one of the town’s most important religious and architectural landmarks.
After lunch, cross the Mekong River by local ferry to Ban Xienmiene Village. Walk through the peaceful community and observe everyday village life before continuing uphill to Wat Chompet, which offers panoramic views across the river towards Luang Prabang.
Return to your hotel in the afternoon, then enjoy the rest of the day at leisure for independent exploration.
Guests attending the alms-giving ceremony should dress modestly, remain quiet and follow the guide’s instructions to respect this meaningful local tradition.
Overnight in Luang Prabang.
After breakfast, travel southeast of Luang Prabang to Long Lao Village, home to Khamu and Hmong communities. Explore the village with your guide and learn about traditional houses, farming practices and daily life in the surrounding countryside.
Begin the approximately nine-kilometre trek to Kuang Si Waterfall, which normally takes around three and a half hours. The route passes through orchards, rice fields, vegetable gardens and forested hills, providing a closer look at the rural landscapes beyond Luang Prabang.
A picnic or local-style lunch is included during the excursion. On reaching Kuang Si Waterfall, enjoy time to relax beside the turquoise pools, swim in designated areas when conditions permit and visit the nearby bear rescue centre.
Continue by vehicle to Luang Prabang, arriving in the late afternoon. The evening is free, and dinner may be arranged independently.
Trekking level: Moderate. A good general level of fitness is advisable. Comfortable trekking shoes with good grip are recommended, as sections of the trail may become muddy or slippery after rainfall.
Overnight in Luang Prabang.
After breakfast, leave Luang Prabang and travel north towards Nong Khiaw. Stop along the way at Nam Park Market, where you can experience the atmosphere of a rural trading centre and observe local commerce in northern Laos.
Upon reaching the Nong Khiaw area, board a traditional long-tail boat for a scenic Nam Ou River cruise lasting approximately one hour and forty minutes. The journey passes limestone mountains, forested slopes and small settlements scattered along the riverbanks.
Disembark at Ban Hatsapheuy and continue on foot for around thirty minutes to Sojam Village, home to the Tai Daeng community. Walk through the village with your guide and learn about local customs, traditional lifestyles and everyday activities.
An included lunch will be served during the journey. Later, check in at a family-run homestay and spend time in the peaceful village surroundings before sharing a home-cooked dinner prepared by your hosts.
The homestay provides simple local accommodation without air conditioning or hot water. Toilet facilities are located outside the sleeping area. Guests should bring essential toiletries, insect repellent and a small overnight bag.
Dinner and overnight at a homestay in Sojam Village.
After breakfast at the homestay, travel by boat along the Nam Ou River, observing daily activities and rural life along the riverbanks.
Begin the active 100 Waterfalls Trek, following a route through rice fields, shallow streams and forest trails. Accompanied by your local guide, continue towards the lower cascades before climbing through a succession of flowing waterfalls, rocky sections and natural pools.
Take time to rest and swim where conditions are considered safe. A picnic-style local lunch is included during the trek.
From the upper falls, follow a village trail with views across the Nam Ou Valley, then descend towards the river. Return to Nong Khiaw by boat, check in at your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at leisure.
Trekking level: Active and challenging. Good physical fitness and confidence on wet, rocky and uneven terrain are required. Quick-drying clothing and secure trekking sandals or water shoes with good grip are essential. Flip-flops are not suitable.
Overnight in Nong Khiaw.
After breakfast, leave Nong Khiaw and begin the overland journey towards Luang Prabang. Stop at Ban Nayang Village to gain further insight into traditional rural life in northern Laos.
Continue to Ban Ou Village, then cross the Mekong River to visit the sacred Pak Ou Caves, located near the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers.
Explore the two caves, which contain hundreds of Buddha images donated by worshippers over many generations. The caves remain an important pilgrimage site, particularly during Lao New Year.
After lunch, board a traditional local boat for a scenic Mekong River cruise to Luang Prabang. Relax during the downstream journey while passing forested hills, agricultural landscapes and small riverside communities.
Upon arrival in Luang Prabang, continue to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for independent exploration, and dinner is not included.
The cruise is operated on a traditional riverboat with covered seating and simple onboard facilities. A light jacket, sun protection and a waterproof bag for personal belongings are recommended.
