Experience the cultural diversity and mountain landscapes of Northern Thailand on this 4-Day Mae Hong Son Loop Tour from Chiang Mai to Pai, Mae Hong Son, Baan Rak Thai, Pang Oung and Doi Inthanon National Park, before returning to Chiang Mai. Combining scenic mountain roads, traditional villages and remarkable natural attractions, this journey offers an in-depth introduction to one of Thailand’s most distinctive regions.
Travel through the winding highlands of the famous Mae Hong Son Loop, stopping at local markets, geothermal springs and ethnic minority communities along the way. With comfortable transportation, carefully selected accommodation and a well-paced itinerary, this tour is ideal for travellers seeking authentic cultural encounters, mountain scenery and lesser-visited destinations beyond Thailand’s main tourist centres.
After breakfast, begin the day with a visit to the local morning market in Pai, where you can observe the easy rhythm of daily life before leaving town. Continue through the mountain roads towards Mae Hong Son, with a stop at Baan Phang Paek, a village inhabited by the Lisu ethnic community, where traditional customs and local ways of life remain part of the highland culture.
Your journey continues to Tham Lod Cave, one of Northern Thailand’s most impressive cave systems. Accompanied by local guides, board a traditional bamboo raft and glide along the underground stream that passes through the cave. Along the way, admire dramatic limestone formations, large chambers and ancient wooden coffins, offering a fascinating look into the area’s natural and archaeological history.
After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, continue to Mae Hong Son and explore the peaceful lakeside area around Jong Kham Lake. Visit Wat Chong Kham and Wat Chong Klang, two beautiful Shan-style temples that reflect the strong Burmese influence of the region. Later, continue to Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, set on a hill above the town, where sweeping views over Mae Hong Son and the surrounding mountains create a memorable end to the day.
Overnight in Mae Hong Son.
After breakfast, start the day with a scenic boat trip along the Pai River, passing quiet riverside communities, forested hills and peaceful rural landscapes that reflect the gentle pace of life in Mae Hong Son Province. Along the way, visit a Long-Neck Karen village, where you can learn about the traditions, customs and distinctive cultural identity of this ethnic community.
After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, continue to Su Tong Pae Bamboo Bridge, an impressive hand-built bamboo bridge stretching across rice fields and wetlands. Built as a local connection between communities, the bridge also offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and is one of Mae Hong Son’s most atmospheric landmarks.
In the afternoon, travel to Baan Rak Thai, a picturesque lakeside village near the Myanmar border. Originally settled by Yunnanese Chinese communities, the village is known for its peaceful scenery and distinctive cultural character. Continue to Pang Oung (Baan Ruam Thai), a serene highland valley surrounded by pine forests and mountain landscapes, where the calm reservoir creates one of the most photogenic natural settings in Northern Thailand.
Overnight in Mae Hong Son.
After breakfast, depart Mae Hong Son and travel through the scenic mountain landscapes of Northern Thailand towards Doi Inthanon National Park, home to Thailand’s highest peak at 2,565 metres above sea level. Renowned for its cool climate, diverse ecosystems and spectacular scenery, the park is one of the country’s most treasured natural destinations.
Upon arrival, explore the summit area and enjoy the refreshing mountain air before visiting the elegant Royal Pagodas, built in honour of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit. Surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, the pagodas offer panoramic views across the surrounding mountains. Continue with a gentle walk along one of the park’s nature trails, providing an opportunity to appreciate the unique highland environment and rich biodiversity of the area.
