The 3-Day Mu Cang Chai Rice Terraces & Mountain Villages Tour from Hanoi begins and ends in Hanoi, following a scenic route through Nghia Lo, Tu Le, Khau Pha Pass and Mu Cang Chai. Over three days, the journey combines mountain landscapes, ethnic communities, guided walks, cycling and two nights at local homestays.
Cycle along quiet village paths near Nghia Lo, passing rice paddies and cornfields while visiting Black Thai and White Thai communities. Continue to Muong Lo Market, walk through the rice fields and villages of Tu Le, then cross Khau Pha Pass with selected photography stops. In Mu Cang Chai, explore Om Khom village and visit Kim Noi Hill and Mam Xoi Hill for panoramic views, subject to weather, accessibility and seasonal conditions.
With guided cultural visits, local meals, flexible viewpoint stops and a varied balance of driving and light outdoor activity, this tour is well suited to international travellers seeking a closer look at Northwest Vietnam’s rice terraces, mountain scenery and everyday village life.
After breakfast, begin the day with a guided visit to Muong Lo Market, where people from surrounding ethnic communities gather to trade vegetables, fruit, spices, meat, textiles and handmade products.
Continue along the scenic route towards Mu Cang Chai, travelling through mountain valleys inhabited by Thai, Hmong and Dao communities. On reaching Tu Le, take an approximately one-hour guided walk through rice fields and local villages before enjoying lunch in the area.
In the afternoon, cross the spectacular Khau Pha Pass, stopping at selected viewpoints overlooking the surrounding valleys and terraced landscapes. Additional photography stops may be made around La Pan Tan, with locations chosen by your guide according to the weather, visibility and seasonal conditions.
Arrive in the Mu Cang Chai area later in the day and settle into a traditional stilt-house homestay. Afterwards, join your guide for a walk through Om Khom, a Black Thai village situated at the foot of the hills. After the day’s activities, return to the homestay for dinner.
The day includes several short vehicle stops and an easy-to-moderate walk along rural paths, which may become uneven or muddy after rain. Photography time at the viewpoints is flexible, while the market visit and village walks are guided.
Overnight in Mu Cang Chai.
Wake to the fresh mountain air, enjoy breakfast and check out before beginning the return journey from Mu Cang Chai to Hanoi.
Stop first at Kim Noi Hill for panoramic views over Mu Cang Chai Town and the surrounding mountain landscape. Continue with a short guided walk to Mam Xoi Hill, one of the area’s most distinctive rice terrace viewpoints. The scenery varies throughout the year and is especially striking during the rice season, when the terraces display their characteristic seasonal colours. Outside the main rice season, this visit may be replaced by a scenic viewpoint near a cascading mountain stream, depending on accessibility, local conditions and your guide’s recommendation.
Continue to Nghia Lo for lunch and a short rest before travelling onwards to Hanoi. Upon arrival, your guide and driver will say farewell, bringing the tour services to an end.
Most of today is spent travelling along winding mountain roads. The viewpoint walk may include slopes, steps and uneven terrain, so supportive footwear and clothing suitable for changing mountain weather are recommended.
If you need help arranging anything beyond the program, our team will be happy to assist.
