The 5-Day Mekong Delta Tour from Ho Chi Minh City travels through Cai Be, Binh Hoa Phuoc, Tra Vinh, Cau Ke, Long Xuyen, Chau Doc and Tra Su Cajuput Forest before returning to Ho Chi Minh City. Designed for travelers who want to experience the Mekong beyond its main tourist stops, the journey combines river life, Khmer heritage, countryside cycling, authentic floating-market activity and three distinctive homestay stays.
Begin on the Tien River in Cai Be, visiting family-run workshops before cycling through the rural landscapes of Binh Hoa Phuoc Island. Continue to Tra Vinh Khmer heritage sites, explore Cau Ke by bicycle and local ferry, then travel along the Hau River to a family homestay on Tiger Island. An early-morning visit to the genuine Long Xuyen Floating Market leads into Chau Doc, Ba Chua Xu Temple and the Sam Mountain area.
The final day explores the wetlands and waterways of Tra Su Cajuput Forest. With local meals, guided cultural visits, varied river and land transport, and immersive homestays, this itinerary offers an engaging, well-balanced way to experience the cultural and natural diversity of the Mekong Delta.
After breakfast, leave Binh Hoa Phuoc and continue toward Tra Vinh, an important centre of Khmer culture in the Mekong Delta. Depending on the day's operating conditions, there may be a stop at a bonsai garden or local plant nursery along the way.
In Tra Vinh, visit Ang Pagoda and the Khmer Culture Museum with your guide. Together, these visits provide insight into Theravada Buddhism, Khmer traditions, religious architecture and community life, highlighting the cultural diversity of this part of southern Vietnam.
After an included local lunch, continue by road to Cau Ke and check in at Suonsia Homestay. In the late afternoon, enjoy a gentle guided bicycle ride or countryside walk lasting approximately one to two hours. Follow quiet village roads through orchards, gardens, cultivated fields and rural communities before returning to the homestay for dinner.
The afternoon activity is relatively easy and suitable for travelers with normal fitness. Comfortable footwear, lightweight clothing, sun protection and a light rain jacket are recommended.
Overnight: Suonsia Homestay, Cau Ke
After breakfast, set out on a guided Cau Ke countryside cycling experience of approximately two hours. Ride through rural communities and agricultural landscapes, following local village roads and crossing a branch of the Mekong by local public ferry.
Continue through the countryside, passing Khmer pagodas and scenes of everyday village life before visiting Huynh Ky Ancient House in the Cau Ke area, subject to local opening conditions. The route offers a closer view of the agricultural and cultural landscape surrounding Cau Ke.
Return to the homestay before continuing by vehicle toward Long Xuyen, with lunch included during the journey. On arrival, board a local motorboat on the Hau River and travel toward Tiger Island, entering smaller canals lined with tropical vegetation, riverside homes and small farms.
Disembark on Tiger Island and meet your host family at the local family homestay. The remainder of the afternoon is kept at a relaxed pace, allowing time to settle in and enjoy the peaceful island surroundings before dinner with your hosts.
Cycling is mainly on local roads but may include uneven sections. Guests should be comfortable riding a bicycle for around two hours.
Overnight: Local family homestay on Tiger Island
Wake early for a guided boat trip to Long Xuyen Floating Market, where local traders gather on the Hau River to sell fruit, vegetables and other agricultural products directly from their boats. Your guide explains traditional Mekong river-trading customs while you observe the morning activity from the water.
Long Xuyen is a genuine working market rather than a staged tourist attraction, so the number of boats and level of trading naturally vary according to the day, season and local conditions. After the market visit, continue by boat through nearby waterways and stop at a local orchard for seasonal tropical fruit tasting before returning to Long Xuyen pier.
Meet your driver and continue by road toward Chau Doc, with lunch included either along the way or after arrival depending on the day's timing. In Chau Doc, visit Ba Chua Xu Temple, located at the foot of Sam Mountain and known as one of the region's prominent pilgrimage sites.
Later, continue into the Sam Mountain area using locally arranged transport, subject to access, weather and safety conditions. From the area, take in views across the surrounding lowlands and countryside near the Cambodian border. Check in at your hotel afterward, with the evening free to explore Chau Doc independently and choose your own dinner.
Overnight: Hotel in Chau Doc
After breakfast at the hotel, leave Chau Doc and travel to Tra Su Cajuput Forest, one of the distinctive wetland landscapes of An Giang and the upper Mekong Delta.
Explore the cajuput forest and peaceful waterways using the locally operated transport arranged for the visit. Surrounded by wetland vegetation and natural scenery, the experience offers a refreshing contrast to the villages, floating markets and agricultural landscapes encountered earlier in the journey. The appearance of the forest and waterways may vary naturally according to the season and water levels.
After exploring Tra Su Cajuput Forest, continue the journey toward Ho Chi Minh City. Lunch is included at a suitable local restaurant along the route.
Travel onward in the afternoon, with arrival time depending on traffic and road conditions. The tour ends at the confirmed drop-off point in Ho Chi Minh City.
