The 9-Day Northeast Vietnam Tour: Ba Be, Ban Gioc, Route 4 & Ha Long Bay begins at Noi Bai International Airport and follows a route through Hanoi, Ba Be National Park, Cao Bang, Ban Gioc, historic Route 4, Lang Son and Ha Long Bay before returning to Hanoi for sightseeing and departure.
Experience northern Vietnam through a mix of nature, local life and history. Stay with a Tay family in Pac Ngoi Village, trek through Ba Be countryside, cruise Ba Be Lake, visit Puong Cave and Dau Dang Waterfall, and cycle to Hua Ma Cave. Continue through Phuc Sen Village to Ban Gioc Waterfall and Nguom Ngao Cave, then explore Dong Khe, Quang Liet Valley and Coc Xa with historical interpretation of Route 4 and the 1950 Border Campaign.
Finish with an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise, a traditional water puppet performance and visits to Ba Dinh Square, Tran Quoc Pagoda and Hoa Lo Prison. The itinerary is well suited to travelers seeking active countryside experiences, cultural encounters, dramatic landscapes and deeper historical context in one connected journey.
Leave Hanoi after breakfast and travel north toward Ba Be National Park, passing through the countryside around Thai Nguyen. As the journey continues, the scenery gradually changes to forested mountains, cultivated valleys and peaceful rural communities.
After lunch along the way, arrive at Pac Ngoi Village and settle into a traditional Tay family homestay near Ba Be Lake.
In the afternoon, meet your local guide for an approximately 1.5–2.5-hour countryside trek. Follow quiet village paths through farmland and foothills near the lake, passing traditional Tay houses and observing everyday life in the surrounding countryside.
The exact walking route may be adapted according to weather, trail conditions and the group's walking ability.
Return to the homestay in the late afternoon, with time to relax before enjoying dinner prepared by your hosts.
The trek is generally easy, although rural paths can become uneven, muddy or slippery after rain. Comfortable walking shoes with good grip, lightweight clothing and rain protection are recommended.
Overnight: Tay family homestay in Pac Ngoi Village
Begin the day with a local motorboat journey across Ba Be Lake, surrounded by forest-covered limestone mountains and the quiet landscapes of Ba Be National Park.
Cruise along the Nang River toward Puong Cave, enjoying views of riverside communities, fishing activity and the changing scenery along the waterways.
Stop near a Tay community for a guided village walk before continuing by boat toward the Dau Dang area.
After lunch at a local family-run stop, take a short guided walk through the national park to Dau Dang Waterfall. Spend time enjoying the natural surroundings before returning across the lake by boat in the afternoon.
Walk back to your homestay and enjoy dinner with your hosts.
Walking today is generally easy to moderate. Paths around the waterfall may be uneven or slippery after rain, so shoes with good grip are recommended.

Set out after breakfast on a guided countryside cycling ride toward Hua Ma Cave, passing small villages, farmland and rural landscapes around Ba Be National Park.
On arrival, explore the cave on foot while your guide introduces its limestone formations and the local stories associated with the site.
Cycle back toward Pac Ngoi Village for lunch, then leave Ba Be and continue by road through the mountainous countryside of northern Vietnam toward Cao Bang.
Arrive in the late afternoon, check into your hotel and enjoy a free evening for your own arrangements.
The cycling is suitable for travelers with a normal level of fitness. Hua Ma Cave involves steps and some uneven surfaces, so comfortable walking shoes and light rain protection are recommended.
Overnight in Cao Bang
Travel east from Cao Bang through the limestone countryside toward one of the region's most distinctive landscape
Your first stop is Phuc Sen Village, where family-run blacksmith workshops preserve traditional forging techniques used by Nung craftspeople to produce agricultural tools and everyday household items.
Continue to Ban Gioc Waterfall, dramatically positioned within the karst landscape along the Vietnam–China border. Spend time exploring the waterfall area before having lunch at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, visit nearby Nguom Ngao Cave. Follow the visitor route through its limestone chambers and observe naturally formed stalactites and stalagmites.
Rather than returning to Cao Bang City, continue to your accommodation in the Ban Gioc or Trung Khanh area, creating a more efficient route for the following day's journey toward Dong Khe.
Nguom Ngao Cave includes steps as well as damp and uneven surfaces. Walking shoes with good grip are really recommended.
Overnight: Ban Gioc or Trung Khanh area
Leave the Ban Gioc/Trung Khanh area after breakfast and travel toward Dong Khe and the historic Route 4 area, an important setting of the 1950 Border Campaign.
With a knowledgeable local history guide, explore the Dong Khe area and learn about the strategic importance of the former military position and the fighting that took place along Colonial Route 4.
Continue by vehicle to Quang Liet Valley for an approximately 1.5-hour guided countryside walk. Follow rural paths between limestone mountains, farmland and small hamlets toward the Coc Xa area.
The surrounding cliffs, valleys and narrow terrain provide useful geographical context for understanding the historical events associated with Route 4.
After the walk, return toward Dong Khe and stop at a local Route 4 commemorative site overlooking the town for further historical interpretation.
Have lunch locally before continuing by road to Lang Son, arriving in the late afternoon. After checking in, enjoy the remainder of the evening at your leisure.
This is one of the more active days of the journey. Rural trails may be uneven, muddy or slippery after rain, so sturdy walking shoes, comfortable outdoor clothing and sun or rain protection are recommended.
Overnight in Lang Son
After breakfast, leave Lang Son and travel toward the coast for your Ha Long Bay overnight cruise.
Around midday, board the vessel, receive a welcome and safety briefing and settle into your cabin. Enjoy lunch while cruising among Ha Long Bay's limestone islands and seascapes.
During the afternoon, join the sightseeing activities included in the confirmed cruise program. Depending on the selected vessel and operating route, these may include kayaking, a bamboo boat ride, a cave visit or another local experience.
Return to the cruise later in the day for time to relax on deck and enjoy the sunset. An onboard cooking activity may also be offered according to the vessel's program.
Dinner is served on board, after which you can enjoy the evening at your leisure. Relax, socialize with fellow travelers or join activities such as squid fishing when available.
Overnight aboard the cruise in Ha Long Bay
Wake early to enjoy the peaceful morning scenery of Ha Long Bay. When offered by the cruise, you may join a Tai Chi session on the sundeck.
After breakfast, take part in the scheduled morning sightseeing activity before returning to the vessel. Check out of your cabin and enjoy brunch or an early lunch, depending on the cruise program, while sailing back toward the harbor.
After disembarkation, meet your driver and transfer back to Hanoi.
Check into your hotel and enjoy some free, self-guided time to rest or explore the surrounding area.
In the evening, attend a traditional Vietnamese water puppet performance, one of Hanoi's distinctive performing arts traditions. Dinner afterwards is left open for your own arrangement.
The exact cruise route, sightseeing stops, activity schedule and onboard experiences may vary according to the selected vessel, weather, tides and local operating conditions.

After breakfast, begin your guided Hanoi city tour at Ba Dinh Square and the exterior area of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, where your guide introduces key events connected with Vietnam's modern history.
Continue to Tran Quoc Pagoda beside West Lake for an introduction to Hanoi's Buddhist heritage.
Next, visit Hoa Lo Prison, where preserved sections of the site and historical displays provide insight into its role during the French colonial period and later chapters of Vietnam's modern history.
After the visit, transfer directly to Noi Bai International Airport according to your confirmed departure flight schedule.
If your flight departs earlier in the day, the sightseeing program will be shortened or adjusted to ensure sufficient time for airport check-in.
